Marybeth Maltby
My artistic journey began on Vancouver Island, the end of February 2020 with a workshop on how to paint mandalas on rocks. The next week we were locked down because of Covid, and as a widow, I was all alone. Thank goodness there were many beaches and lots of rocks to keep me busy.
To keep my growing passion going, I started leaving my creations on all of the walking paths in the Comox Valley, but soon the authorities said that we were no longer allowed to do this, as people were touching the rocks and felt that this could spread Covid. So then I started leaving them on all of my neighbours gardens, and when I ran out of neighbours, I started leaving a large bucket in my driveway, where I collected donations and gave the money to the Therapeutic Riding program in my neighborhood. From there, I started doing craft Fairs and psychic fairs on the island. At the time I was spending my winters on Vancouver Island with family and my summer’s in Sauble Beach at my cottage. I now reside in Sauble Beach full-time and have my artwork available at the Port Elgin, farmers market for the last three years. I also do workshops for those who would like to learn this fun and calming way of painting. Traditionally, the Mandala is a spiritual and ritual symbol used in Hinduism and Buddhism believed to be a meditative and therapeutic process for the creator. The radiating geometric pattern flows from the centre starting point and is said to symbolically represent the universe. Additionally, according to renowned psycho analyst Carl Jung, Mandala art is a means of expression for the wholeness of the self.
