Shirely Underwood

Picture
I am a multimedia artist working in acrylics, pastel’s, watercolour, gouache, and most recently - and most passionately- in encaustic. Living in Southampton Ontario, I am surrounded by landscapes that continually pull me back to the quiet poetry of nature. Water, reflections, trees, and the shifting language of sunlight are my constant companions, and I return to them again and again in my work.
My encaustic pieces are created with raw materials, taken from bees and trees - wax, resin, pigment, and heat moving together to hold a memory of touch. This process feels both elemental and intimate, allowing me to paint not just what I see but what I feel in the presence of land, light and stillness.
I create in order to share the beauty and peace that nature offers so freely. Through layers of colour and light, I hope viewers experience a moment of quiet recognition - a breath, a pause, a soft reminder of the calm held within the natural world.
